    We won!!!

So in January of this year, I decided to pursue WPPI’s 16×20 Print Competition. It happens to be one of the most renowned competitions in our industry. It’s judged by a panel of prestigious portrait photographer’s from all over the world. I don’t know if it’s the absolute biggest of all print competitions but I do know it’s the biggest one I know and I have been in this business for 10 years.

Well guess what? We won! We won first prize in the Glamour/Boudoir category and Grand Prize for the entire Portrait division! I am also so very elated to state that our print scored a perfect 100. From what I am told, there have been about 5 perfect 100 scores in the last 15 years of WPPI print competitions. That number is adjustable depending on who I ask so don’t take me to school on that.

    Here is the winning print:

In making the decision to enter, I wanted to select just the right piece of work. I decided on this selection from a series that was created and inspired by an Ingres painting. My sister Ximena helped with the make up and styling for this particular series. I sent this image to my master print maker, Jonathan Penney. He created the beautiful magic that was needed to make this baby a winner. He selected the final appearance of this portrait, the right paper to display it on and matting which are all essential ingredients for a winning print.

All of this collaboration culminated in a winning print! I am so, so very honored in the most humbling way to be recognized by peers in my industry. Although I do not know who the judges where as of now, I am eternally grateful to them for this great honor.

Here is the wonderful message I received from WPPI:

    Dear Aaron Gil:
Thank you for entering the WPPI 16×20 Print competition. We had an extraordinary response this year and we appreciate your participation. We are proud to report we received 2,000 entries, which is nearly 25 percent more than last year! Your work sets the bar for our industry, and this year’s competition is one to be proud of! From the entire crew at WPPI, thank you for all your hard work!

Below you will find your image entry number and score. If you did not score an 80 or above, you may want to consider some of the basic tenets of good image-making: proper exposure, lighting excellence, good posing and expression, adequate retouching and excellent postproduction techniques.

Here is a guide to help you determine the value of your score:

100 Exemplary – Best possible use of all skills and creativity: new, fresh, and unique
95-99 Superior – Approaching the highest standard in imagination, creativity and technique
90-94 Outstanding – Exhibiting exceptional skills in all areas
85-89 Excellent – Very good use of imagination, skill & technique
80-84 Above Average – Good standard of professional skill, creativity, and technique
76-79 Average – Average professional skill and technique
70-75 Below Average – Requires improvement in technique
Your WPPI 16×20 Print Competition Results
    1ST PLACE Grand Award Winner

Sometimes we are hard pressed with finding a unique and perfect Mother’s Day gift for the mommies in our lives.  Did I ever tell you about the one year I was so uninspired that I purchased an atrocious, plastic, fuchsia colored wall clock for my mom?  To give this story more ridiculous poignancy, this was in my adult years too.  This was in the 90′s which explains the plastic fuchsia.

Needless to say, I got a very uninspired and disappointed “thank you” in return from my mom, complete with a forced smile and all.

    This year, if you are on the search for something truly unique, please consider our;

I have a beautiful and heart warming story to recount for you, complete with a video that will give you chills.

Recently a client of mine who happens to be a very proud mother, inquired if I knew of a videographer. Her teenage daughter Emily, was scheduled to perform in a musical recital and my client wanted her performance captured for friends and family who could not be there that evening.

I knew just the right person. Walter Pawluk and I have been professionally acquainted for quite some years through the wedding industry. We shared office space back in the day and through my interaction with him, I knew that he was reliable and created a high quality of work.

I enthusiastically provided my client with Walter’s information. A day or so after the recital, my client sent me the following message:

    “Aaron,

Walter did a wonderful job videotaping Emily’s performance. Thank you for the wonderful referral. I’m such a proud mom!!! Here’s the link if you would like to see it — it was a magical night for us (Walter had it posted on YouTube that same night)…”

Each time I view this video I place myself in my clients shoes as a parent. I think of the natural talents of Emily and it makes me think of my daughter’s natural talents and I become touched. And although my daughter’s talents are not so much in song, I look forward to a similar night where she may share her talent with a part of the world.

I also think of how valuable of a service that Walter provides. He documents priceless memories. In this case he documented a very special night for my client. Now she can share this night with family and friends who live afar. Best yet, she can go back and relive this moment time and time again forever.

Huge thanks to Walter for capturing this beautiful memory!

Selecting a location for your family portrait is important. Location provides a personal message about you and your family.

If the you desire a more formal, conservative taste, then you may choose to have their portrait taken in a studio. A studio portrait is traditionally hung above a fireplace, displayed in family rooms and staircases.

An outdoor location offers a different appeal from studio. Generally an outdoor location offers more versatility. The outdoors provides a variety of natural light choices, flexibility concerning moods, and an either formal or informal display. Furthermore, just as a movie setting has a large impact on the message being communicated to the viewer so is the same for your portrait.

Depending on your personal taste, you may have your family portrait taken in the studio or an outdoor setting. Either way FotoNuova can create a stunning memory that last for years to come.

Let’s face it, most folks dread the notion of having themselves photographed.  Most are simply not accustomed to maintaining poses and smiles for so long.  When the time comes to pose for the camera, we all tend to tense up and become uncomfortable.  The nerves start to take over, stirring butterflies in our stomachs and producing sweaty palms.  Add in unfavorable factors such as unpleasant weather, thirst, hunger and fussy kids, and it’s no wonder people feel anxious. The bad news is being in a state of anxiety during your session will certainly be conveyed in pictures.

One bit of good news is that your photographer will try to put you at ease. Often this comes in the form of encouraging words, jokes or instructing you to take deep breaths.  Getting great looking pictures is a collaborative process between the model and photographer.

But on your portrait day, you really want those very special and important photographs to be perfect.  These are the photographs you show to your friends and family.  These are the photographs that will serve as your historical documentation and the legacy you leave behind.  Your children and grandchildren will get to know these photographs well.

Don’t worry, there are solutions:  As a portrait photographer, I tell my clients that a few minutes of preparation will help ease those nerves and stir up your creative posing ideas.

Here are three tips that will help calm those nerves and sure to have you relaxed for family portraits!

    1.  Clip And Save! Prior to your family portrait, flip through a few of your favorite magazines and determine which photos contain poses and expressions you enjoy.  Study the elements of these photos:  How are the body, arms and legs posed?  What is the expression in the eyes and mouth?  Clip your photos and continue to study them when getting ready for other events and by the time your portrait session arrives, you will have a mental file of poses and expressions that you enjoy.  You should feel free to strike a few of those poses between shutter clicks!  Some might want to bring along their clippings for visual assistance.

    2.  Snack & Sip: On your big day, it is so very important that you cater to your body.  Running on an empty stomach only compounds any discomfort.  Plan to carry a few fruits, granola bars and bottled waters.  On the way to your portrait session, find a moment to eat a quick snack, drink water and serve your body.  This will help ease and comfort your stomach and you’ll be in better spirits naturally!

    3.  Mini-Meditation: A few minutes prior to your shoot, ask your photographer for just a moment of alone time.  Remember that portraits are forever and taking a moment just prior is very well worth it.  Now, find a quiet spot where you can sit comfortably.  Close your eyes and keep them closed for the duration of this exercise:  Take 5 deep breathes.  Inhale deep through the nose and exhale out through the mouth.  Allow your muscles to gradually release.  Now as you begin to relax, create a mental picture of yourself posing for your photos.  Visualize yourself looking into the camera in a very relaxed manner.  Briefly envision yourself effortlessly flowing through many poses.  Bring to life a mental vision of you looking at the resulting photos and loving the outcome.  Imagine that you are naturally aware of which angles are complimentary and automatically take the best stance to enhance your look.  Continue with a few more supporting scenarios.  Then, allow this image to fade.

    You want more?

OK, let’s take the mini-meditation it up a notch by creating a mental Happy Place that can be summoned later in your actual session.  It’s easy and useful: Think of a very happy moment that took place in your life  (It only works if you select an event that you remember clearly) and relive the details … Where are you?  Who is with you?  What is the time of the day?  What is the weather like?  Remember the happiness and joy of the moment.  Continue to hold this great feeling.  As the feeling reaches it’s pinnacle, rub your index finger and thumb together to lock in this Happy Place.  Then you can allow the image to fade.  By the time you open your eyes, you should feel more relaxed.

If your nerves start to get the best of you during your photo session, rub your index finger and thumb together to recall your happy moment. The power of positive thought is immense. Maintain that a positive thought while your photographer is clicking away.

It’s that easy!  Now you can say goodbye to thoughts of stiff cardboard-like photos and say hello to easy – and beautiful – portraits!

Los Angeles portrait photographer lends a hand for a worthy cause

Los Angeles family portrait photographer creates a wonderful and unique Santa experience for families walking for arthritis.
    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PRLog (Press Release)Jan. 22, 2013 – The number of arthritis sufferers is astounding, and many become crippled to the point that the most basic daily needs become a struggle.

“For many, arthritis strips away their humanity.  It is a very frustrating existence.  This is why we were so glad to be a part of the Jingle Bell Run/Walk in Glendale, CA,” said Aaron Gil of FotoNuova.

FotoNuova was on hand for the runners, walkers and families, providing complimentary “Vintage Santa” portraits.  The Santa was modeled after Father Christmas and was an awe-inspiring sight.

“Many of the runners and families were very pleased to see Santa.  Most of the children were just in complete awe at him.  It was a really great time for everyone involved,” Gil continued.

The Jingle Bell Run/Walk was sponsored by Glendale Adventist Medical Center.  Teams exceeded their goal of $100,000 dollars, but FotoNuova was along as well to donate their services for the excellent cause.

“We provided everything necessary for a professionally produced, studio portrait.  It is a portrait that normally commands a very large sum in our studio, but we were happy to provide it for free to those who ran on behalf of arthritis research,” Gil said.

FotoNuova is a full service photography studio, providing family portraits, business portraits and other photography services to Pasadena and surrounding areas.

“We take great pride in making any and all events special with our discerning eye for detail and capturing the perfect moment in each and every portrait.  Our complimentary work at the Jingle Bell Run/Walk is only a sample of our work,” Gil concluded.

I wanted to share something really unique and special. In a time of a down economy and when the job market is so competitive, it’s so very important for job seekers to stand out and gain any advantage they can in being memorable to hiring managers. Hundreds of applicants are likely to be applying for the same jobs. It would be a great idea to stand out from the pack.

Just look at how unique this resume is!:

    business headshot on resume

This job seeker took his FotoNuova business portrait and placed it on a very original looking resume design. If I was a hiring manager, this resume would stop me right in my tracks and force me to take a good look at his qualifications. Furthermore, by looking at his portrait it would help me get a feel for who this person was before I met him. Isn’t this already a leg up on this candidate’s competition? I mean how many resumes have a portrait on them? Stand apart from the sea of black ink on white paper!

These same principles apply to business owners and executives. Having a warm and friendly portrait will help tear down the imaginary wall that exists among one another. A professional portrait is a very powerful communication medium.

Your business portrait can be traditional, modern or natural light/business casual. Luckily we provide all three styles!

More beautiful words from a recent family portrait in Pasadena taken during the holidays! We are extremely stoked and honored from the love!

My wife and I were very hesitant about taking family portraits with our twenty month old. Our baby can be rambunctious, to say the least. Moreover, neither one of us were particularly enthusiastic about “modeling” for an hour or more. It’s just not our thing. However, our relatives wanted some good pictures for their mantel. A friend of ours recommended FotoNuova, fortunately for us. Aaron’s professionalism, flexibility, and creativity were phenomenal. After talking to us for a while, he suggested an outdoor, natural location that definitely fit our style. Moreover, our son could frolic, be happy, essentially, be himself. What was more impressive was that our son truly enjoyed the experience. With Aaron’s magic, our son became a ham, posing for the camera, laughing, playing…it was a great experience all around. The result? The photographs were phenomenal, the background and lighting blending gracefully, creating classic, clear, enduring images that will become fixtures in our family’s homes. Thank you, Aaron, for your vision for our family. – Larry M.
